Is it time for a new toothbrush?

June 25, 2019 By East Village Dental Centre

Is it time for a new toothbrush?

Depending on your usage, health, and preferences, our dentist in Chicago recommends that you replace your toothbrush approximately every four months.

One of the biggest factors to figuring out when the time is to replace your toothbrush is if you cannot remember the last time you got a new one. Other factors include:

  • If you’ve been recently sick
  • If you store your toothbrush close to other ones
  • If your bristles are frayed

Styles to Consider

Now that you know you need a new toothbrush, you need to figure out what type to get. Manual and electric toothbrushes are the choices, but which is right for you?

  • Manual: An easily portable toothbrush that is ready to use every time you need it. It doesn’t make noise or vibrate, giving you full control of the pressure you put on your teeth and gums.
  • Electric: This toothbrush requires charging and more to take with you while traveling, but there is a rotating movement of the bristles that makes cleaning your teeth and between gum lines a lot easier.

Keep Your Toothbrush Clean

Once you’ve purchased a new toothbrush, make sure you are keeping it clean by rinsing it under tap water after each brush and storing it in a vertical position. The bristles need to stay upright so they can properly air dry.

Dentists in Chicago know how important it is to keep your oral health clean, and that starts with switching out your toothbrush (or electric toothbrush head) every three to four months. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact us at (773) 231-9620.
