Bone Grafting

Do you think of bone as a hard substance that never changes? At East Village Dental Centre, your Wicker Park dentist, we know that’s not the case. Your body, in reality, is constantly creating new bone cells while removing old ones. In most cases, we benefit from this natural process going on constantly in our bodies. When we lose a tooth or teeth as an adult, however, the bone changes that follow can have serious consequences.

When teeth are lost, the bone that formerly surrounded them begins to melt away, a process known as resorption. Tooth-supporting bone loss can also be caused by periodontal (gum) disease. Whatever the cause, bone loss can complicate the treatment to replace missing teeth.

Fortunately, through the use of bone grafting techniques, the bone that’s been lost can be built up again, enabling your dentist to replace missing teeth with dental implants.

What is bone grafting?

Bone grafting is a minor surgical procedure normally done in your dentist’s office. The dentist makes a small incision in your gum and then adds grafting material.

The grafting material could come from your own body, but today it’s more commonly bone harvested from an animal or human donor that’s been treated by a laboratory to make it sterile and safe to use. The grafting material might also be a synthetic substance.

Whatever grafting material is used, the graft will serve as a scaffold onto which your body builds new bone, enabling your dentist to perform a dental implant to replace missing teeth.

What happens next?

After the grafting procedure, you may experience some discomfort, including minor pain and gum swelling, that can usually be treated with over-the-counter pain relievers. There are also some diet restrictions, such as eating only soft food while your mouth heals, and it may take several months for the transplanted bone material to grow enough new bone to support your dental implant.

The implant procedure

Once the underlying bone is ready, a titanium post (like a tooth root) is surgically positioned into the jawbone beneath the gum line. Once you’ve healed from this procedure, a realistic dental crown can be attached, permanently replacing the missing tooth or teeth.
