Comparing Whitening Techniques

We live in a time where we can change almost anything we want when it comes to our bodies. Our cosmetic dentist in Wicker Park understands that white teeth are in high demand. We decided to take a look at the different whitening techniques and if any of them may work for you.

Number 1: In-Office Bleaching

If you come into EV Dental, you will discover that we offer the latest and most trusted advancements in whitening technologies. In-office whitening is performed by your dentist in the office and shows excellent results. The procedure takes place in a little over an hour. While it may be expensive, it saves you time and you more than likely get immediate results. Some in-office teeth whitening examples are:

  • Zoom!®
  • BriteSmile®
  • LaserSmile®
  • Beyond®
  • Lumibrite®
  • NUPRO®

Number 2: Teeth Whitening Trays and Gels

While the trays and gels can be just as effective as an in-office whitening treatment, they take a lot longer. The whitening all depends on the strength of the peroxide in the gel. Additionally, the trays are worn a couple hours a day or overnight (compared to the in-office, one-hour appointment) and may take anywhere from 3 days to a couple of weeks before you see any results. You can purchase the trays from your dentist or over-the-counter. The trays from your dentist produce faster and more effective results. They contain a stronger peroxide bleaching agent than those purchased over-the-counter. They are also made to custom fit your teeth. Over-the-counter trays are generic and could force the bleaching agent to come in contact with your gums. This causes irritation. If you opt for the teeth whitening trays and gels, definitely consult your dentist on them.

Number 3: Teeth Whitening Strips

You can find teeth whitening strips in almost every drug store. They are sold over the counter. They are relatively inexpensive. They are easy to use. These reasons have people purchasing teeth whitening strips instead of going to the dentist for an in-office treatment. Again, they may take longer depending on how much peroxide is in the strip. You will not see immediate results, but if you stick to the procedure’s instructions, teeth whitening strips show you results over time.

Number 4: Teeth Whitening Toothpastes and Other Whitening Products

Teeth whitening toothpaste contains mile abrasives. The abrasives remove surface stains. Some may also have additional polishing agents and special chemicals that are more effective. Some teeth whitening toothpaste can deliver four times the fluoride of over the counter toothpaste. When you reduce the potential for tiny cracks in your teeth, you are reducing the opportunity for stains. There are other new teeth whitening products like whitening chewing gum, dental floss, and mouthwashes. However, not much research has been done and it’s hard to say if there have been any positive results.
