Dental Pain and Trauma

Significant pain is one of the biggest indicators that you may be in the midst of a dental emergency. Trauma and injuries as the result of sporting and other physical activities are easily preventable with a mouthguard. If you do experience trauma, you can reduce the swelling with a cold compress.

Pain that seems to appear out of nowhere may be the result of tooth decay or infection. Severe toothaches may require a restorative treatment, such as a root canal. Unlike most other offices, East Village Dental Centre can perform same day molar root canals and wisdom teeth extractions. There is no need to suffer while waiting for an appointment.

Dental Abscesses

An abscess is typically the result of a bacterial infection near the root of a tooth. This is a serious condition that can damage your surrounding teeth or soft tissues when left untreated. If you are diagnosed with an abscess, it must be drained as soon as possible to remove the infection. In many cases, the infection is the result of decay within a tooth that spreads outside of the root. Once we remove the abscess, you may need a root canal to fully restore your oral health.

Broken Fillings

A broken dental filling is a minor and fairly common emergency. If you notice a broken or dislodged filling, be sure to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. A broken filling will put your tooth at risk of developing further decay. During your appointment, our doctors will replace the filling to improve the structure and seal off the area from harmful bacteria.

Knocked Out Tooth (Avulsed Tooth)

If you or a family member knocks out a permanent tooth, there are a few steps you should take to save the tooth. The most important thing you can do is keep the tooth moist at all times. If possible, put the tooth back in the socket. You can also place the tooth in a small container of water or milk. Milk is preferred. When handling the tooth always hold it from the crown, never the root. Do not remove or scrub off any attached tissue fragments. You have the best chance of saving the tooth if you receive treatment within the hour.

Chipped and Broken Teeth

If you chip or break a tooth, the first thing you should do is collect all the pieces. Next, you should immediately rinse out your mouth with warm water to clean the area. While a chipped tooth may not immediately constitute a dental emergency, it may worsen over time. At East Village Dental Centre we can fix you with a beautifully crafted permanent crown in just a couple hours.

Excessive Bleeding

Excessive bleeding is often the result of soft-tissue injuries. Soft tissue injuries include those to the tongue, cheeks, lips, and gums. To control the bleeding, you can rinse your mouth with a salt-water solution and place a moist gauze pad to the bleeding area. You can control the pain with an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as Advil or Ibuprofen. If the bleeding does not stop, be sure to schedule your appointment as soon as possible.

When Should You See an Emergency Dentist?

Dealing with dental problems, especially out-of-office hours can be overwhelming. However, not all dental problems should be considered an emergency. When it comes to determining whether you have a dental emergency, then you need to ask yourself some of these questions:

Have you lost, chipped, or broken a tooth?

Are you in severe pain that is affecting your eating, concentration, or sleeping?

Are you continuing to bleed for more than 20 minutes even after using gauze or biting down?

Do you have an infection?

If you have a damaged tooth, are in pain or bleeding, these can lead to long-term medical or life-threatening problems and are classified as a dental emergency.

What to Do In a Dental Emergency

Call your dentist first! Depending on the dental emergency that you experience, there are some things you can do at your home to ease the pain.

If your tooth has been knocked out, then you need to put it in a glass of milk until you get to your dentist. You can use a cold compress to help numb irritation, reduce swelling and stop any bleeding that may occur.

In case you are experiencing pain surrounding one particular tooth, there may be something that has gotten inside the gum tissue or between your teeth. You can also use salt water as a warm mouthwash to reduce swelling and relieve irritation.

What is Considered a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is classified as any state that encompasses facial bone trauma, intense bleeding, and more. Some common causes of dental emergencies include car accidents, falling off your bike, sports injuries, or even falling or tripping can cause dental emergencies.

Another form of dental emergency is a mouth infection that leads to a tooth abscess. If you leave it untreated for a long time, it can cause further complications which require immediate emergency treatment from the dentist.

Where to Go for a Dental Emergency

For most dental emergencies such as knocked-out or broken teeth, our dentists will treat you in our Chicago office. In case you have more serious injuries like broken facial bones, then you should go directly to an emergency room.
