Pediatric Dentistry

Every Wicker Park dentist (including us) knows that the best dental hygiene starts at an early age. In fact, taking care of your children’s’ teeth is just as important as taking care of your own teeth. And it’s not just important because good dental hygiene will help your son or daughter avoid cavities as a child. By making sure your child understands and practices good oral hygiene from an early age, you’re setting them up for long-term dental health.

Since it’s easiest to instill these habits when your child is still young, there’s no better time to start than today! To help you get started on the path to great dental hygiene for your child, we’ll let you in on the things you need to know about children’s dentistry.

What to Watch Out For Pediatric Dentist

Just like in adults, lack of regular visits to a pediatric dentist, poor dental hygiene, and over-consumption of sugary foods will lead to cavities in children. Of course, a Wicker Park dentist can help prevent those cavities from getting any worse but you can prevent it altogether if you’re proactive. Make sure your children aren’t eating too many sugary foods or drinking sugary drinks. When they’re very young you will have to help them brush their teeth but even when they’re old enough to do it on their own they should be supervised for the first few years.

Especially as the child is growing and his or her teeth are developing, it’s important to see a dentist regularly. The dentist can monitor the development of your child’s teeth and spot any abnormalities. Just like anything else, spotting things early means that the problem can usually be solved in a much simpler, more affordable way.

Be Careful with Fluoride Toothpaste

Swallowing toothpaste is not good for you or your child. But unlike you, you won’t be able to trust that your child will remember to spit out their toothpaste when they’re done brushing. To avoid the issues that come with swallowing fluoride, make sure you buy a toothpaste that does not have fluoride. Of course, you should still encourage them to spit out the toothpaste to help them build the habit and skill, but they will be okay if they swallow some of the non-fluoride toothpaste.
