Dental Implants - Are They Worth It?
Implants are known for their stability in the mouth. Unlike dentures that tend to shift around, implants are permanently installed in the mouth to replicate the daily experience of having real teeth.
How this is achieved is they are installed in the jawbone. The implants themselves are incredibly strong titanium alloy screws that are placed and bonded with the surrounding bone - essentially making them a part of your jaw rather than an accessory. The abutment sits above the gums where the teeth are fitted and secured with additional small screws.
The result is teeth that don’t fall out, don’t become, loose, you won’t have to take them out for cleaning, and they are made of high-quality materials to give you a satisfying experience as you are chewing and speaking. Implants can replace 1 tooth, a few teeth, or an entire set.
Who Is a Good Candidate For Dental Implants?
Implants require a strong jawbone and healthy gums to make installation and extended usage a success. They will also require enough jaw area and an intact alveolar bone. An exception to some of these rules would be All-on-4® dental implants which can typically be placed in a way that caters to a patient’s missing bone.
Are Dental Implants Expensive?
Dental Implants have a reputation for not exactly being low cost. However, that is discussing the upfront assessment rather than the length of time you will be wearing them. Implants are designed to last decades with good care and often patients are able to have them in for the rest of their lives. Implants are commonly compared to dentures and traditional bridges which are not nearly as high in cost, but they need replacing more often which can add up in the long run. Insurance providers can cover a portion of the cost of implants upfront at their discretion and there are payment plans available which many patients choose to partake in.
What Do Dental Implants Feel Like?
We’ve been talking about how implants can offer you an experience that is the closest to natural teeth and this is true. But if you are coming from your original teeth there will be a difference. With implants, the sensation of touch you’ll feel will rely on the gum tissue that surrounds it. Essentially, you’ll get more feedback than with dentures, but you will not feel anything with the prosthetic teeth themselves.
