Tips to prevent gum deterioration

Tips to prevent gum deterioration

Gum deterioration can happen when you neglect your smile. Your gums can also begin to deteriorate more quickly as you age. To make sure your gums are as healthy as possible, check out this list of tips to prevent gum deterioration.

Brush and Floss Regularly

Our dentist in Chicago recommends that you brush twice and floss at least once daily to keep your gums healthy. According to the American Dental Association, it doesn’t matter exactly when you floss during the day, but it is important to do it properly and regularly. Brushing once in the morning and once at night is best practice, but for those with dental apparatuses, such as braces, it might be beneficial to brush after every meal.

Don’t Smoke

Smoking can cause a multitude of gum issues including gum disease, infections, and cancer. Smoking also lowers your immune system’s ability to fight off infection, which can make any gum concern hard to reverse. It is best to avoid or quit smoking if you are concerned about your overall oral and gum health.

Use the Right Toothpaste and Mouthwash

Selecting the right toothpaste and mouthwash is important for gum health. To prevent deterioration, consider buying toothpaste with fluoride in it. It is also important to check that your toothpaste has the ADA seal of acceptance. You can double up on oral care by purchasing a therapeutic mouthwash, as mouthwashes can help reduce plaque and tartar and also prevent gum infections and diseases.

Schedule Regular Cleanings

Regular cleanings at your Chicago dentist are important for preventing gum deterioration. A professional cleaning will give your teeth a more invasive treatment and help your dentist spot potential issues early on. It is best to schedule a cleaning every six months so for more information on how to prevent gum deterioration, contact East Village Dental Centre’s Chicago dentists at (773) 231-9620 or visit our website to schedule an appointment.
