Can Teeth Begin to Decay Before They Erupt?

Posted on 11/1/2024 by East Village Dental Centre
Young toddler boy smilingHave you ever wondered if cavities can form before you can even see the tooth in your child's mouth? The answer might surprise you. Yes, tooth decay can begin even before a tooth erupts through the gums. This is known as early childhood caries (ECC).

ECC is a serious problem that can lead to pain, infection, and even tooth loss. It's important to understand how ECC develops and what you can do to prevent it.

How Does ECC Develop?

Tooth decay is caused by bacteria in the mouth that feed on sugars and starches. These bacteria produce acid, which can erode the tooth enamel and eventually lead to cavities.

With ECC, the decay process can begin even before the tooth breaks through the gum line. This is because the bacteria can still access the tooth's surface through the opening in the gum.

There are several factors that can increase a child's risk of developing ECC, including:

•  Frequent exposure to sugary drinks and snacks
•  Poor oral hygiene habits
•  Lack of access to dental care
•  Family history of ECC

What Can You Do to Prevent ECC?

The good news is that ECC is preventable. Here are some things you can do to protect your child's teeth:

•  Start cleaning your baby's gums with a soft, damp cloth even before their first tooth erupts.
•  Once their first tooth appears, start brushing their teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste.
•  Limit their intake of sugary drinks and snacks.
•  Schedule regular dental checkups for your child starting at age one.

Prevention Dentistry is Key

The best way to prevent ECC is through prevention dentistry. This means taking steps to keep your child's mouth healthy from the very beginning. By following the tips above, you can help your child avoid cavities and maintain a healthy smile for years to come.

If you have any questions about ECC or your child's oral health, please talk to your dentist. They can provide you with personalized advice and help you develop a plan to keep your child's teeth healthy.
