Taking Care of Your Gums

Posted on 3/25/2019 by East Village Dental Centre
When most of us think about our oral healthcare we generally only really think about keeping our teeth healthy. Yet taking care of your gums is just as important. To avoid needing to see an emergency dentist in Noble Square, you should educate yourself about what you need to do to keep your gums clean and healthy.

To help you do that, we’ll outline what you need to know to minimize the chance that you have any problems with your gums. That way, you can avoid the discomfort, inconvenience, and expense of needing serious treatment to fix gum problems.

Brushing and Flossing, it’s Not Just for Teeth

Using the proper toothbrush, as recommended by your dentist, and a toothpaste with fluoride, you should brush your teeth at least twice each day. And yes, in addition to keeping your teeth clean and healthy, brushing also keeps your gums healthy. If you don’t brush, plaque will form and build up on your teeth which will result in gum disease.

The same goes for flossing. By flossing each day, you remove food that is stuck between your teeth. Failing to floss means that food waste stays between your teeth below the gumline. This can result in infections that damage your jaw bone, teeth, and gums.

Regular Dental Cleanings

In addition to removing hard-to-remove buildup like tartar, your dentist can spot and proactively treat any problems with your gums. Early detection of gum disease symptoms is critical because issues with your gums are far easier to fix when you haven’t allowed them to develop into more complicated problems.

In this way, simply coming into the dentist’s office for a cleaning every six months or so can save you a ton of money because regular cleanings are far more affordable than a complicated periodontal procedure or needing to see an emergency dentist in Noble Square.

Don’t Smoke

Though most people point to the lung damage caused by smoking as the worst problem, you should also know that smoking hurts your gums as well. Studies have shown that smokers are more likely to have gum disease. Plus because smokers generally have weaker immune systems, they won’t be as well-equipped to fight off infections of the gums.
