What To Do After You Get Dental Implants

Posted on 1/29/2020 by East Village Dental Centre
After you get dental implants, there are a few do’s and dont’s that our dentist in Chicago would like to share with you. Although dental implant surgery is performed under local anesthetic, it’s recommended to have someone drive you home afterward. There is a good chance you will feel tired, and you may begin to feel a bit sore as the anesthetic wears off.

Care and Recovery

Your dentist will suggest pain medication to ease discomfort during the period immediately following surgery. In addition to pain, swelling is an expected part of recovery. Apply an ice pack to the area to reduce swelling – but don’t leave it on for more than 15 minutes at a time in any one area. Some bleeding is also normal, but if it seems excessive, or lasts for more than 24 hours, call your dentist.

Don’t Irritate the Implant

Immediately after getting dental implants in Chicago, you should avoid doing anything that might irritate the surgical site. That includes touching it, rinsing your mouth with mouthwash for the first several days, spitting, or using tobacco products while you are recovering.

Eat Only Soft Foods and Liquids

For the first several days, avoid any food that requires chewing. Stick to yogurt, milkshakes, soup, and other similar foods. Avoid anything that is too hot, as well as tea, coffee, alcohol and spicy meals for at least the first 48 hours after this procedure.

Oral Hygiene and Follow Up

You should not use toothpaste or mouthwash for the first several days after the procedure, however, rinse with warm salt water after each meal to clean your mouth. Also, make sure you attend all of your follow-up appointments, to ensure you are recovering properly and that no infection is present.

Rest and Relax

Try to plan on resting in bed for the first couple of days after receiving dental implants in Chicago. Avoid any exercise or strenuous activity, as this can cause excess pain and bleeding, and slow the healing process. Rest, relax, and you will be showing off your beautiful new smile in no time!
