Comparing Braces

Braces have come along way since brackets and wires were once our only options. If you want to make your teeth straighter, there are plenty of ways to do it. But, which way is right for you? We take a look at the different options of braces and what works best to perfecting your smile. Who knows, maybe you won’t need brackets and wires at all, and you can use Invisalign in Chicago.

Metal Braces (or Traditional Braces)

As mentioned above, this are the type that has the metal bracket applied to the teeth. Most common in teenagers, the bendable metal wire is threaded through the brackets. This applies pressure to the teeth to move them into place. You can choose the rubber band color that moves around each bracket, which allows for customization. Known as the least expensive and fastest version, metal braces are common when it comes to moving teeth to the correct location.

Ceramic Braces

A type of alternative to metal braces is ceramic. Instead of metal, the brackets are made out of ceramic. The ceramic has the same texture and color as teeth so they blend in a bit. Additionally, orthodontists use matching ceramic so the treatment would be hard to see. A downside is that these brackets can stain easily and could still be a bit uncomfortable. This treatment is more expensive and if they are clear, patients steer more toward Invisalign.

Lingual Braces

A less common type of braces are lingual braces. They are essentially metal braces, but on the inside of your bite. They can be either metal or ceramic but less noticeable and intrusive than the traditional. They are less noticeable than the braces that are on the front of your teeth. The downsides with lingual braces, however, outweigh the positives. Negatively, lingual braces are difficult to clean and harder to talk. If you have severe orthodontic conditions, you wouldn’t be using lingual braces. Because of the higher prices and lower positives, lingual braces are not popular.

Self-Ligating Braces (or Damon Braces)

Again, these are akin to the traditional braces. They still use the bracket and wire system and many orthodontists use them. The mechanism here consists of brackets with clips (or doors) that grip the wire. This eliminates the rubber band ties. Positively, these trap less food and are less painful than others. Self-ligating braces reduce patient visits to the orthodontist, but only work for some patients, not all.

Invisalign

Align Technology was founded in 1997 and over time, turned into Invisalign. Invisalign’s cutting-edge technology and data have helped millions of smiles. Today, this type of teeth-straightening technique is the most common and most effective. Invisalign is removable so your teeth stay clean. It replaces metal braces and involves a range of clear plastic aligners. Over time, these mouthguard lookalikes are able to straighten your teeth. Roughly every two weeks, you receive a new aligner, meant to move your teeth just a bit more than the previous one. They are custom made for your mouth and help maintain results.

EV Dental Centre offers many of the above solutions to straighter teeth. Invisalign in Chicago has never been so easier to use. Let us help you figure out which mechanism works best for you. Call us today!
