5 faqs about visiting the dentist

Most people do not go to school and learn everything there is to know about teeth and gums – but dentists do exactly that. Therefore, if you are unsure about proper oral care or have other questions related to dentistry, ask your Wicker Park dentist. To give you a bit of a head start, five of our patient’s most asked questions are listed below, along with the answers.

What Is the Best Way to Whiten My Teeth?

Patients are always asking about whitening their teeth. It can be a difficult question to answer because there is no one-size-fits-all treatment. An in-office professional whitening is always the fastest and most effective way to whiten teeth. However, if your teeth are not badly discolored, you may get adequate results with some over-the-counter treatments. Your Wicker Park dentist will be able to help you decide which choice is right for you.

How Often Do I Need to Visit the Dentist?

It is important to visit your dentist twice a year for regular check-ups and cleanings. However, there are exceptions to this. If you have a history of gum disease, are undergoing orthodontic treatment, or your dentist has recommended more frequent visits for any reason, then it is important to comply with those recommendations.

What Exactly Is a Cavity?

Almost everyone realizes a cavity is a bad thing. However, many people don’t know exactly what one is. Simply put, a cavity is a hole in the tooth caused by decay. It is a void space where the tooth structure has been compromised and it is important to get cavities filled promptly as they only get bigger with time.

How Safe Are Dental X-rays?

Very safe. The amount of radiation you receive is equivalent to the amount of radiation you are exposed to on a cross-country flight in an airplane.

How Long Will My Dental Restorations Last?

We’d like to tell you that they’ll last forever, but that is usually not the case. With time, fillings, bridges, and crowns may become loose or break down, allowing decay to damage the area surrounding the restoration. Visit your Wicker Park dentist regularly and maintain great dental habits to help keep those restorations in great shape for as long as possible.
