Braces in Chicago
Do you wish you have straight teeth? Crowded, crooked or teeth which don’t align properly can detract from an otherwise healthy smile. Besides the aesthetic factor, braces can improve your oral health because it’s challenging to brush and floss teeth that overlap. Besides being more confident smiling, it’s easier to chew and speak clearly with straight teeth.
How Do I Get Started with Braces?
You can start with a consultation with our braces dentist. You’ll get a comprehensive treatment plan outlining the steps, how often you will return for adjustments. and how long you can expect to wear them. Contact our dental office today if having perfectly aligned teeth interests you.
If you discover that orthodontic appliances are not for you, our dentist can discuss other options with you, such as veneers. With veneers, you won’t have to invest years in the process if this is what concerns you.
You are never too old to straighten your teeth. At our office, we see plenty of older patients who always wanted straight teeth or correct an underbite or overbite, but couldn’t have it done before. Oral appliances have changed significantly over time, and they are more comfortable and less noticeable than ever.
How Will My Dentist Put on My Braces?
A dental exam and teeth cleaning is the first step. The appliance has to go on clean teeth, and filling cavities are more challenging when you are wearing braces. After you teeth are clean and try, your dentist will glue the brackets on your teeth and run the arch wires through the brackets. Rubber bands go on to secure the wire. The process is painless, but the glue does not have a pleasant taste.
What Types of Braces Can I Choose From?
Traditional metal braces are the most popular choice as they are the most affordable and they work best for severe misalignment issues. Ceramic braces work the same way as metal ones, but they are less noticeable. Invisible braces are clear aligner trays which are removable to eat and brush and floss. A new aligner tray comes every two weeks. Our dentist will work with you and recommend options that meet your needs and your budget. You will learn about the pros and cons of each type of braces.
Adults often choose clear aligners, as they don’t have to announce their orthodontic treatments to colleagues at work. Aligner trays work quickly, but they are not recommended for complex alignment issues. Older teens can get clear aligner trays if they are responsible enough to wear the tray for 22 to 23 hours every day.
Teens usually don’t mind metal appliances since many pf their friends are wearing them. They are seen as a rite of passage for young teenagers.
How Much Do Braces Cost?
Your appliance cost depends on several factors, including the type of orthodontic appliance selected and the severity of the misalignment, as this affects your treatment length. If you have dental insurance, it may cover a portion of the cost. Check your policy carefully. Some dental insurance providers only cover orthodontic treatments for children, not adults. If you are uninsured or your out-of-pocket cost is too much for you, we can offer flexible financing options. Please contact us if you have more questions.
How Long Will it Take to Get Braces Put On?
Traditional metal or ceramic appliances take about an hour or two to place. You’ll wear the appliances for one to two years. Every month or two, you will need to visit us for adjustments and swapping out the rubber bands, called O-rings. Teenagers typically have shorter treatment times because their jawbone isn’t fully grown, so it is easier for their teeth to move. Once put on, your mouth may feel sore for up to a week. The discomfort is easily managed with over-the-counter pain relivers.
Why Do I Have to Wear a Retainer After My Braces Come Off?
Retainers keep your teeth in position after your orthodontic appliance comes off. Teeth have a tendency to revert back to their original position when your appliance comes off. Normally, you’ll wear a retainer for at least one year, but it many be longer if your teeth were severely misaligned. Normally, you wear the retainer at night. Always wear your retainer if your dentist recommends one. It will protect your investment in time and money to get straight teeth.
