Caring for Your Teeth While Camping

Happy woman enjoying the outdoors while maintaining dental hygiene during camping

Caring for Your Teeth While Camping

For many Americans, camping is an essential way to escape the rigors of city life and enjoy nature. Camping allows you to relax with your family and friends and really enjoy the outdoors. While you are camping with friends and family, you still need to make sure you are caring for your teeth and gums. Here are some pointers you can use to care for your teeth in the great outdoors.

Choosing a Good Toothpaste

If you are primitive camping, you will be at a campsite without a bathroom, which means you will need to be creative. Several companies make toothpaste using all-natural ingredients in biodegradable tubes to satisfy the requirements of primitive camping. Also, many companies make toothpaste dots or toothpaste gum. These two items allow you to brush your teeth without a toothbrush at all and without a toothpaste tube, which is handy for primitive campers.

If you do decide to take toothpaste, be sure that you rinse your mouth out over a hole in the ground so you can bury it. You can also choose to use a toothpowder mixture of salt and baking soda instead, or you can dry brush while you are primitive camping. When you are camping, the important thing is to leave no trace, and it is more important to have the brushing action in your mouth to remove plaque than to have minty breath.

What About Toothbrushes?

There are camping toothbrushes that are foldable and biodegradable. This means you can bury the toothbrush with your camp waste. What if you do not want to pack a toothbrush? As it turns out, you do not have to. There are substitutes for toothbrushes during a camping trip, such as celery or apples, a paper or cloth towel, or even your finger is better than nothing.

Not sure whether your teeth are ready for summer vacation? We can help. Reach out to our office today to schedule an appointment with one of our dentists in Chicago.
