Everything you need to know about dry mouth

DRY MOUTH

That dry mouth feeling can be easily fixed by gulping down a glass of water. But what if the dryness persists for a long time? It means that you have developed an oral problem called xerostomia. It causes dry mouth by limiting the production of your saliva.

Symptoms Of Dry Mouth

  • Bad breath.
  • A sticky feeling in your mouth.
  • Difficulty in chewing, swallowing, and speaking.
  • Think and stringy saliva.
  • Sore throat.
  • Grooved tongue.
  • Problems wearing dentures.
  • Unusual sense of taste.

Causes of Dry Mouth

  • Medication: Certain over-the-counter medications can make your mouth dry. These include antidepressants, antihistamines, decongestants, pain relievers, and muscle relaxants.
  • Aging: As you age, inadequate nutrition leads to dry mouth and tooth decay.
  • Alcohol and Tobacco Use: Both these addictions can double the symptoms of dry mouth.
  • Recreational Drugs: Methamphetamine, marijuana, and opioids cause meth mouth that not only causes cavities but also weaken your gums and dry out the salivary glands.

At East Village Dental Centre, Our doctors and our doctors know perfectly well how to treat this oral problem. Apart from drinking lots of water, chewing gum, moistening your food with gravy, avoiding caffeine, and brushing your teeth regularly can help you get rid of dry mouth and prevent bacterial build-up. To schedule an appointment, call at (773) 231-9620.
