I Need Help For My Sensitive Teeth

About 44 million Americans suffer from sensitive teeth at one time or another. While some adults experience fleeting tooth sensitivity from time to time, others have constantly sensitive teeth. If you are one of those people who have sensitive teeth, there are some treatments you may want to try.

What Are Sensitive Teeth?

Sensitive teeth usually happen because the dentin is exposed. Each tooth has three layers. The top layer is called enamel, and it coats and protects your tooth from cavities. The second layer, called dentin, is also hard, but it is yellowish in color rather than white. The third layer is called the tooth pulp. Unlike the other two tooth layers, the tooth pulp is soft. It is filled with nerves and the blood supply for the tooth. When your dentin is exposed, your teeth may become more sensitive to hot or cold foods because the tooth nerves are closer to the surface of your tooth.

How Did My Teeth Become So Sensitive?

There are many reasons your teeth may be more sensitive. Many people experience sensitive teeth because their tooth enamel is worn. Over time, tooth enamel becomes thinner due to normal wear and tear, overbrushing, or trauma, which means your teeth will be more sensitive. Also, your teeth can become sensitive due to a cavity that has made a hole in your tooth enamel as well as your dentin. You may have a cracked or chipped tooth that has exposed your dentin as well. Worn-out dental fillings can also cause tooth sensitivity. Gum disease can expose your tooth roots, causing them to become sensitive, too.

Treating Your Sensitive Teeth

If you have sensitive teeth, you need to know there are treatments available. If you have a cavity or gum disease, our dentist can treat your issue, which should make your teeth less sensitive. Dentists also treat sensitive teeth by coating them in sealants that give you an extra layer of protection. You can help reduce your tooth sensitivity at home by using desensitizing toothbrushes, toothpaste, and mouthwashes.
