Myth vs. fact: the brushing edition

As your Wicker Park dentist, we want to inform you of all the dental rumors that float around when it comes to brushing your teeth. If you have a question regarding your oral health, read a reputable source or contact us today and we will be happy to help you!

Myth: If you brush hard enough, it will remove more plaque.

Fact: If you are brushing too hard with a nylon toothbrush, you can cause damage to your teeth and gums instead of helping them stay healthy.

Myth: Once you have gum disease, you cannot do anything about it.

Fact: With good oral care and a healthy lifestyle and brushing routine, you can prevent and even reverse gum disease. Contact us today if you think you have gum disease.

Myth: Brushing your gums is bad for you.

Fact: When you clean your gums with a soft toothbrush it can help protect your gum tissue and prevent gum disease.

Myth: You need to get your wisdom teeth removed no matter what.

Fact: Wisdom teeth are your third molars that grow in the back of your mouth between the ages of 17 and 25. Many patients get their wisdom teeth removed if they cause pain, inflammation, or discomfort. However, some people don’t need to get them removed. In fact, if they erupt without causing pain or crowding, your dentist may let them be.

If you have any questions about brushing your teeth, such as what type of toothbrush is best and if there’s a specific type of toothpaste to use, contact your Wicker Park dentist today and we will be happy to help you!
