What causes dentures to break?

DENTURES

Dentures are an affordable option for replacing missing teeth and improving your appearance. They can also last long with proper care and maintenance. Nevertheless, these prosthetic devices can crack, become loose, or break. Here are some factors that can cause dentures to break.

Ill-Fitting Dentures

Some situations can make the dentures stop fitting properly. They can become loose due to changes in your mouth. This may involve gum shrinkage or teeth movement. When you continue wearing ill-fitting dentures, there may be constant flexing when you bite, causing the dentures to break. If your dentures do not fit snugly in your mouth, consulting a dentist is a good idea. Ill-fitting dentures can also cause oral issues such as discomfort, mouth sores, and speaking problems. The dentist may adjust the denture to restore its fit. In severe cases, the professional may recommend new dentures.

Dropping Dentures

The most common reason why dentures break is dropping them when cleaning or removing them from the mouth. However, the dentures may not break instantly after dropping them on a hard floor or empty sink. The impact weakens the dentures, and they may start breaking over time. Due to this, it is vital to handle dentures with care. Also, be sure to fill the sink with water when cleaning the dentures. This softens the fall after you drop the dentures.

General Wear And Tear

General wear and tear is a gradual process that occurs after a period. Dentures experience pressure from biting, chewing, and changes in temperatures. This makes them undergo a cycle of daily wear and tear. While they have a long lifespan, they do not last forever. As the dentures age, the acrylic materials weaken, allowing the bacteria to enter and break down their chemical bonds. Whether your dentures break or you have been wearing them for a long period, seeking professional care is the best option. Contact us so we can find an appropriate solution for your broken dentures.
