What is a gum lift?

September 30, 2020 By East Village Dental Centre

What is a gum lift?

You’re probably familiar with many common cosmetic surgeries like facelifts and tummy tucks. But did you know a cosmetic dentist in Wicker Park could also perform a gum lift? It’s true and it’s a common surgical procedure that cosmetic dentists perform for a patient who would like to improve the appearance of their gums for aesthetic reasons.

Many patients want to have a gum lift performed by a cosmetic dentist in Wicker Park so they can be more confident in their smiles. So if you’re not happy with the way your gums look, whether they’re too high or too low, keep reading so you can understand exactly what a gum lift is.

The Details About Gum Lifts

Most gum lifts are performed solely for cosmetic reasons though if the gum has receded drastically or is covering the crown of the tooth, your dentist may perform a gum lift for health reasons as well. Generally, the idea of the surgery is to either trim away gums that overcrowd the teeth, making them look too small, or adding gum tissue when the gums have receded so much that the teeth appear longer than desired.

The Procedure

Every person’s mouth and gums are unique to that person. Plus, everybody has different medical histories, allergies, and more, so a cosmetic dentist in Wicker Park will use a variety of methods for surgeries depending on the situation. Your dentist may use lasers, radiosurgery, or scalpels to perform the procedure. They also may show you, using a mark on your teeth or gums, where your gums will be when they finish the procedure. That way, you can ensure that the proper amount of your gums are being taken back or restored.

Your dentist will likely use an anesthetic to number the area of your mouth they’ll be working on. When it’s finished your dentist should let you know how long to expect for recovery. Listen to his or her advice on taking care of your teeth and gums while you’re recovering. And take care to eat softer foods that won’t get stuck in your teeth and gums while they’re healing from the procedure.

Choosing A Dentist

The success of your gum lift procedure depends on the skill of your dentist, so don’t go to just anyone. Find a dentist near Wicker Park in Chicago that can restore your gums and make your smile confident again.
