October is National Dental Hygiene Month – a reminder of the importance of practicing good oral health and a time to celebrate the work that dentists and dental hygienists do. No matter what your age, it is important to maintain a good at-home dental routine and to schedule regular checkups. If you are looking for ways to celebrate National Dental Hygiene Month, here are a few things to do:
Schedule Your Next Cleaning
Now is a perfect time to schedule your next dental checkup and cleaning. Cleanings and checkups should be scheduled 1-2 times per year in order to improve oral health. This reduces the risk of tooth decay, cavities, gum disease and will brighten your smile, so what’s to lose? Schedule an appointment with your Wicker Park dentist.
Replace Your Toothbrush
Get rid of your old toothbrush and start fresh! Using the same toothbrush for too long decreases its effectiveness and could be spreading bacteria. Wicker Park dentist recommend replacing your toothbrush every three months.
Flossing
Let’s be honest, your dentist always tells you how important it is to floss, but you rarely do. Flossing is essential to your oral health and should be done at least once every other day. Make flossing fun but trying out different flavors and types of floss.
Give Back
Another way to celebrate is by giving back to your community. Donate extra toothbrushes and floss to local shelters so that everyone can practice proper oral hygiene.
